Spring To Do List…

Daily:

  • Check for and remove debris in pond.
  • Once water temperature reaches 50 degrees fish can be fed with spring fish food. This food is wheat germ based with added Vitamin C.

Weekly:

  • Use MicrobLift Spring/Summer Cleaner
  • Preform a 10% -25% water exchange
  • Do a water test – balance any unbalanced water
  • Add pond salt after water exchange
  • Add dechlorinator and heavy metal remover after water exchange
  • Add Liquid Barley
  • Use Algaecide
  • Check and Clean Pond Filters

Monthly:

  • Treat koi with KoiZyme. Spring offers the largest opportunity for disease outbreak in your pond. Protect your fish with a preventable dose.

As Needed:

  • Preform a spring cleaning on your pond. Remove any debris that has found it’s way into the pond over the winter.
  • Replace UV bulbs – do this once per year, we recommend spring time
  • Divide and replant overgrown plants
  • Place a spawning net in pond to “incubate” new koi eggs and keep them safe from predators.

Winter To Do List…

As Needed:

  • Check for and remove debris in pond.
  • Feed fish up to three times per day. Fish that are fed more often are more friendly and grow more rapidly. Pay attention to how much you are feeding them. Fish should not be fed more than they can consume in 5 min. Try giving them treats such as watermelon, frozen peas, cheerios, or other fruits and vegetables.
  • Aerate, Aerate, Aerate! Oxygen is what keeps everything healthy. Fish demand more oxygen in warmer water temperatures. If they don’t have to fight for it they are less stressed and less susceptible to diseases.
    • Clear pond of dead plant foliage
    • Use Sludge Eating Bacteria
    • Preform a 10% -25% water exchange
    • Do a water test – balance any unbalanced water
    • Add pond salt after water exchange
    • Add dechlorinator and heavy metal remover after water exchange
    • Add Liquid Barley
    • Use Algaecide
    • Check and Clean Pond Filters – if filters are getting dirty more often, then clean them as needed.
    • Fertilize your plants
    • Once water temperature drops to upper 60s start feeding fish autumn food with wheat germ and added Vitamin C. Once water temperature is in the mid 50s STOP feeding the fish.
    • When temperature is in the upper 60s stop fertilizing water plants and start cutting back dead or decaying plant material except plants with hollow stems.
    • Add liquid barley extract to pond to minimize string algae growth
    • Begin adding cold-water sludge eating bacteria into pond to breakdown any existing sludge.
    • Remove leaves, debris and sludge from bottom of pond using skimmer net, pond vac or by hand.
    • Clean filter and skimmer pads
    • Net pond and stream to keep debris and predators out
    • If pond is less than 18” bring fish inside for the winter.
    • Increase salt level to .25% to protect the fish over the winter
    • Place container filled with clay or sand in bottom of pond to allow frogs to burrow.
    • After first frost disconnect pumps and place in a bucket of water, store at room temperature and now not allow to freeze. Blow out any water remaining in pond tubing. Connect aerator and or pond de-icer if fish are present in your pond, this creates a hole in the ice to release toxic gases. An aerator should be place a minimum of 6”-12” above the lowest level in the pond to prevent chilling the warmest water, which resides in the bottom of the pond in the winter.
    • Check to ensure that both the pond de-icer and aerator are operating properly.
